Alaska's education system

In 2012, Alaska was removed from the federal No Child Left Behind Act, freeing it to pursue its own methods of monitoring student performance. Standards Based Assessments (SBA) were used statewide through the 2013-2014 school year, but going forward, the state will use new standardized tests. The SBA is based on Grade Level Expectations, which estimate how well students in grades 3 through 9 have mastered academic performance standards in reading, writing, and mathematics. The new standardized test will be given to students in grades 3 to 10 and will be divided into two parts: mathematics and English arts.

The new standardized test was created by the University of Kansas Institute for Achievement Assessment and was offered to schools in both paper and computer formats for two years beginning in 2015. After that, the exam will be taken on a computer only. Promoting computerized testing has been a means of saving money, but it can also return test results more quickly than paper administration.
