Arizona's education system

Primary and secondary education
Arizona's public schools are divided into approximately 220 independently operated local school districts, most of which are administered by elected county principals. These are overseen by the Arizona State Board of Education (a division of the Arizona Department of Education) and the state education superintendent (partisan-elected every even-numbered year when there is no presidential election). - year semester). In 2005, the School District Reorganization Board was formed to combine and consolidate many of these school districts.
Higher education
Arizona has three public universities: the University of Arizona, Arizona State University, and Northern Arizona University. These schools are governed by the Arizona Board of Trustees.
Private higher education in Arizona is dominated by a large number of for-profit "chain" (multi-site) universities. There is only one traditional (single-site, non-profit, four-year) private college (Prescott College) in Arizona. Arizona has an extensive network of two-year technical schools and community colleges. These colleges were historically governed by separate statewide boards, but in 2002 the legislature transferred almost all oversight authority to individual community college districts. The Maricopa County Community College District is one of the largest community colleges in the country, with 11 community colleges throughout Maricopa County.
