Delaware's education system

Delaware was the originator of Belton v. Gebhart, one of four cases consolidated into Brown v. Board of Education, the U.S. Supreme Court decision that led to the demise of segregated public schools. Importantly, the Belton case was the only case in which a state court ruled in favor of the plaintiffs, ruling that racial discrimination was unconstitutional.

Unlike many states, Delaware's education system is centralized in the state superintendent, with local boards of education controlling taxation and some curricular decisions.

As of 2011, the Delaware Department of Education has approved 25 charter schools in the state, including one all-girls facility.
