Florida's education system

The state's public elementary and middle schools are administered by the Florida Department of Education (FLDOE). FLDOE also has authority over the Florida College System. The State University System is under the jurisdiction of the Florida Board of Trustees.
As required by Article IX, Section 4 of the Florida Constitution, Florida has 67 school districts, one in each county. Both are independent from City Hall. School districts tax properties within their jurisdiction to maintain budgets.
Florida has hundreds of private schools of all kinds. FLDOE has no authority over the operation of private schools. Private schools may or may not be accredited and no achievement tests are required for seniors graduating from private schools. Many private schools obtain accreditation and conduct achievement tests to demonstrate to parents the school's interest in academic performance.
