Georgia's education system

Georgia's Flag Education in Georgia consists of public and private schools in Georgia (a state of the United States) such as the University of Georgia, private colleges, secondary schools, and elementary schools.

The Georgia Department of Education (GaDOE) manages public education in the state. This department is managed by an elected state superintendent of schools. Municipalities and their respective school districts operate separate public schools, but GaDOE audits the performance of public schools. GaDOE also makes recommendations to state leaders on education spending and policy.

Georgia high schools (grades 9 through 12) offer standardized multiple choice in each of eight core subjects, including Algebra I, Geometry, U.S. History, Economics, Biology, Physical Sciences, and Grade 9. You must take the End of Course Test (EOCT). Literature and Composition, and American Literature and Composition. The official purpose of the test is to assess "specific content knowledge and skills." A minimum test score is not required for students to earn credit in a course, but test completion is required. EOCT scores account for 15% of a student's performance in a course. Criterion-Referenced Competency Tests (CRCTs) are taken in grades 1-8.

High school students must achieve a passing score on four Georgia High School Graduation Tests (GHSGT) and the Georgia High School Writing Assessment to receive a diploma. Subjects assessed include mathematics, science, language and social studies. These tests are first offered during the student's 11th grade and allow multiple opportunities to pass the test before graduating at the end of 12th grade.
