Illinois's education system

The Illinois Board of Education (ISBE) administers public education in Illinois. The State Commission consists of nine members appointed by the Governor with the consent of the Senate. Board members serve four-year terms, and state board membership is limited to two consecutive terms. The Board sets educational policies and guidelines for public and private schools, preschool through grade 12, and vocational education. Analyzes educational goals, needs and requirements and proposes legislation to the Illinois Legislature and Governor for over 2 million school children in Illinois.

Although local governments and their respective school districts operate separate public schools, ISBE uses the Illinois School Report Card to audit public school performance. This agency is headquartered at 100 North 1st Street, Springfield. The agency also has offices at the James R. Thompson Center on the Chicago Loop.

Education is compulsory in Illinois from ages 7 to 17. Schools are generally divided into, but not limited to, three stages of primary and secondary education: elementary school, middle or junior high school, and high school. District territories are often complex structures. Many areas of the state are actually divided into two school districts, high schools and elementary and middle schools. And such districts do not necessarily share boundaries. A high school has several elementary school districts, which may be connected to multiple high school districts.
