North Carolina's education system

Elementary and secondary public schools are overseen by the North Carolina Department of Public Education. The North Carolina Superintendent of Public Education is the secretary of the North Carolina Board of Education, although the board, not the superintendent, retains most of the legal authority to formulate public education policy. In 2009, the Chairman of the Board also became the “Chief Executive Officer” of the state school system. North Carolina has 115 public school systems, each overseen by a local school board. A county may have one or more systems. The largest school systems in North Carolina are Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, Wake County Public Schools, Guildford County Schools, Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools, and Cumberland County Schools. There are 2,338 public schools in the state, including 93 charter schools.
