North Carolina's education system

Elementary and secondary public schools are overseen by the North Carolina Department of Public Education. The North Carolina Superintendent of Public Education is the secretary of the North Carolina Board of Education, although the board, not the superintendent, retains most of the legal authority to formulate public education policy.
