Virginia's education system

Education in Virginia addresses the needs of students from pre-kindergarten through adult education. In 1984, the Virginia Legislature said, "Education is the cornerstone of Virginia's future." Virginia's education system consistently ranks among the top 10 states in the U.S. Department of Education's national assessment of educational progress, and Virginia students perform above average in all subjects and grade levels tested. A 2010 Quality Counts report rated Virginia's K-12 education as the fourth best in the nation. All school districts must adhere to educational standards set by the Virginia Department of Education. The ministry maintains an assessment and accreditation system known as Learning Standards to ensure accountability. In 2008, 81% of high school students graduated on time after four years.
