Washington's education system

As of the 2008-2009 school year, 1,040,750 students were enrolled in Washington's elementary and middle schools, and 59,562 teachers were employed and educated. As of August 2009, there are 295 school districts in the state, served by nine service districts. The Washington School Information Processing Cooperative (non-profit, opt-in, state agency) provides an information management system for financial and human resources and student data. Elementary and secondary schools are under the jurisdiction of the Office of the Superintendent of Public Schools (OSPI), headed by Superintendent of Public Schools Randy Dorn.

High school seniors and seniors in Washington can take advantage of the state's running start program. Initiated by the State Legislature in 1990, the program allows students to attend public-funded higher education institutions while earning high school and college credits.

The state also has several public arts-focused high schools, including the Tacoma School of the Arts, Vancouver College of the Arts, and The Center School. It also has three science and math-based high schools, one in Delta in the Tri-Cities, Washington, another in SAMI in Tacoma, Washington, and another in Des Moines, also known as Aviation High School.
