Wyoming's education system

Public education is directed by state public education supervisors, who are elected state officials. Education policy is set by the State Board of Education. The State Board of Education consists of nine members appointed by the Governor. The constitution prohibits the state from establishing curriculum and textbook choices. These are the prerogatives of the local school board. The Wyoming School for the Deaf, which was the only in-state school to support deaf students in Wyoming, closed in the summer of 2000.

Wyoming has a four-year public university called the University of Wyoming in Laramie. In addition, there are seven two-year community colleges in the state.

Until new legislation was passed in 2006, Wyoming hosted unaccredited institutions, many of which were suspected diploma mills. A 2006 law requires non-accredited institutions to choose one of three options: move out of Wyoming, close, or apply for accreditation. Oregon's Office of Degree Accreditation predicts that Wyoming's diploma mill issue may be resolved within a few years.
